COLE, Benjamin, fl.1723-1767 : [CITY OF LONDON] ALDERSGATE WARD WITH ITS DIVISIONS INTO PRECINCTS AND PARISHES AND THE LIBERTY OF ST. MARTINS LE GRAND, ACCORDING TO A NEW SURVEY. [London] : 1754 [but 1772]. An attractive antique map of the western fringe of the City of London, running from Barbican (now Beech Street) down to Newgate, via Aldersgate Street and St. Martin's le Grand, with Noble Street and Foster Lane to the east, and Little Britain to the west. The map is decorated with a rococo cartouche, the arms of the then alderman (William Benn), views of the churches of St. Anne & St. Agnes and St. Botolph Aldersgate, and a compass rose. Nunn & Co., linen-drapers at 35, and Spooner & White, cheesemongers at 36. Engraved by Major Samuel Barenger (fl.1807-1831) from an original study by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of nineteenth century London.
