LEIGHTON, Henry : [ISLINGTON] SKATING IN THE REGENT'S CANAL TUNNEL. [London : 1855]. An entertaining antique print - a group of cockneys - dressed for the cold, smoking a pipe, shining a torch, holding a candle - having fun on skates in the frozen canal tunnel. A notice (on which the engraver has included his name) cautions against bathing and washing in the canal. Engraved by Henry Leighton (fl.1851-1872) and originally produced for the "Illustrated London News" of 3rd March 1855. London : Jones & Co., 1827. A highly attractive antique print of the early industrial landscape - locks, bridge, tunnel, smoking chimneys and in the foreground two handsome Pickford's barges. Engraved by Frederick James Havell (1801-1840) from an original pencil and water-colour drawing (now in the Museum of London) by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of ninteenth-century London.
