[BOWLES, John] : ST. BARTHOLOMEWS HOSPITAL. [London : 1724 (but later)]. A handsome antique print - a bird's-eye view of the famous hospital, its inner courtyards and the adjacent buildings. An engraved explanatory text (dated 1723) gives a brief description and history of the hospital - "it appears that in the year last past, 3,381 persons were cured & discharged". Originally produced as one of the "Several Prospects of the most noted Publick Buildings, in and about the City of London" published by John Bowles in 1724 - but here in a later impression on wove paper dating from the early nineteenth century. Owen (fl. 1796-1838) from an original study by the London draughtsman, engraver, printer and printseller, T. Prattent (fl.1790-1819), who had premises in nearby Cloth Fair. Originally produced for B.
