BUCKLER, John Chessell, 1793-1894 : BERMONDSEY ABBEY. [London] : 1810. A pleasant and uncommon antique print - a view of the house in Mill Lane built on and incorporating the remains of the eleventh-century Cluniac abbey. Engraved by an engraver only recorded as G. H. - probably George Hollis (1793-1842) - from an original study (now in the Guildhall Library) by the young John Buckler. [ENGLISH SCHOOL] : [LONDON : SOUTHWARK AND BERMONDSEY] ST. OLAVE AND ST. MARY MAGDALENS BERMONDSEY SOUTHWARK, TAKEN FROM YE LAST SURVEY WITH CORRECTIONS. [London] : 1755. A most attractive antique map - a depiction of the Southwark and Bermondsey parishes of St. Olave and St. Mary Magdalen - from London Bridge across to Shad Thames, with Tooley Street, "Barnabie" (Bermondsey) Street, Crucifix Lane, Long Lane and parts of Kent Street (now Great Dover Street) and an un-named Grange Road. A numbered key gives the names of seventy-five of the smaller streets, courts and alleys. Although remaining unpublished until 1720, other maps in this series are known to have been originally produced by Richard Blome in the late seventeenth century and the present map may also be his work. The present version was produced for the part-work edition of John Stow's "A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster" (London : 1754-1757). SOLD |
