A delightful antique print of the old Billingsgate from the water, the river alive with small craft, the Monument and the spire of St. Magnus the Martyr on the skyline. An intricately engraved decorative border of fishing nets, barrels, lobsters and dolphins surrounds the image. Engraved by James Carter (1798-1855) from an original study by Frederick Calvert (fl.1815-1845). [CRAIG, William Marshall] : BILLINGSGATE : MACKEREL. London : Richard Phillips, 1804. An attractive antique print - a woman hawker sets out from Billingsgate to cry her basket of mackerel through the streets. Mackerel were more plentiful between May and July than any other type of fish in London at this time and were even allowed to be sold on a Sunday, as long as they were landed before the commencement of divine service. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte.
