A highly attractive antique print - Robert Smirke's classical facade and portico, opened in 1847 - the courtyard criss-crossed with fashionably attired visitors - from the scarce part-work series generally known as "The World's Metropolis, or Mighty London, Illustrated by a Series of Views Beautifully Engraved on Steel" (London 1851-1855).

[London : Cassell & Co., 1878]. A handsome antique print of the splendid old round reading room of the British Museum designed by Sydney Smirke - readers in formal Victorian attire deep in study. Originally produced as a supplementary presentation plate to the part-work "Old and New London" (London : 1873-1878).
Line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 154 x 197mm (approx. 6-1/8" x 7-3/4"). A couple of faint and tiny marks to outer blank margins, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

Work had already begun on the present museum on its site immediately behind Montagu House. Engraved by William Henshall (fl.1830-1843) from an original study by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of 19th century London. From Shepherd's series "London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century" (London 1829-1832).
