[London : Leadenhall Press, 1891]. A pleasant antique print of the old Public Record Office - Victorian Fetter Lane busy with horse-drawn wagons and carts. From an original design by the painter and illustrator William Luker and engraved in Paris by Ch. Guillaume & Cie. for the Leadenhall Press publication "London City" (1891).
Hand touched and finished half-tone process block. Later hand colour. Image area 160 x 219mm (approx. 6-1/4" x 8-5/8"). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

A handsome antique print of the Public Record Office between Fetter Lane and Chancery Lane, built by Sir James Pennethorne between 1851 and 1866 - showing the lofty clock tower of the original design. Engraved by William Edward Albutt (fl.1836-1863) from an original study by Samuel Read R.W.S., draughtsman, illustrator and painter. Originally produced for the part-work series generally known as "The World's Metropolis, or Mighty London, Illustrated by a Series of Views Beautifully Engraved on Steel" (London 1851-1855).

The buildings were used as the Mercer's School 1892-1959. Engraved by W. Symms from original studies (now in the GLC Collection) by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of 19th century London. From Shepherd's part-work series "London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century" (London 1829-1832).
