ANTIQUE MAP : DORSETSHIRE.

[MOULE, Thomas, 1784-1851] : DORSETSHIRE.

[London : George Virtue, ca.1834]. A fine antique map of the county originally engraved for the part-work "English Counties Delineated" (London : 1830-1837) prepared by the antiquary Thomas Moule. Decorated with coats of arms, a patterned border, and a vignette view of Shaftesbury. Originally engraved in 1834, and in here early state, before the addition of the symbols for parliamentary boroughs, railways, etc.
Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 207 x 262mm (approx. 8-1/8" x 10-3/8"). Trimmed a little tight; tiny nick to right-hand blank margin, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map.

ANTIQUE MAP : A MAPP OF DORSETSHIRE.

SELLER, John, 1632-1697 : A MAPP OF DORSETSHIRE.

London : John Seller, [1694?]. A charming and rare small map of Dorsetshire by John Seller, here in its earlier state before the addition of the two captions explaining the numerals (which give miles west and south from London). This set of maps first appeared under the title "Anglia Contracta", dated to between 1689 and 1694 by Skelton and generally ascribed to somewhere near the latter date. The presence here of Seller's address at the Royal Exchange, premises he is not known to have occupied later than 1686, suggests that the maps may actually have been engraved a little earlier. The maps in their original form were subsequently reissued a number of times between 1696 and 1711, with the later revision to the present map first appearing in the 1701 edition.
Copper line engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface 118 x 152mm (approx. 4-5/8" x 6"). Just a touch dusty, but still in very good state. A guaranteed genuine antique map. Hodson 122.
