A boy with a telescope looks out to sea – the castle rising beyond. Captioned in pencil below image and with a further inscription naming Gastineau on verso.
Ink, pencil and sepia wash on paper. Image size 89 x 148mm (approx. 3-1/2” x 5-7/8”). Inlaid in stiffer paper guard. A few faint spots, but overall in very good order – and a scarce example of the preparatory sketch for a well-known and popular engraving, faithfully executed by Adlard in a near exact representation of the original sketch. [ca.1829]. The original ink, pencil and sepia wash sketch used to produce the print of “St. Martin’s Priory, near Dover. Kent”, engraved by Samuel Lacey (1786-1859) and published by George Virtue in 1829. Cattle drinking at the pond before the ancient priory of St. Martin of Tours, which used to stand on the site of Dover College. Captioned in pencil below the image and with a further inscription naming Gastineau on verso.
Ink, pencil and sepia wash on paper. Image size 82 x 147mm (approx. 3-3/8” x 5-3/4”). Inlaid in a stiffer paper guard. A few faint spots, but overall in very good order – and a scarce example of the preparatory sketch for a well-known engraving, faithfully executed by Lacey in a near exact representation of the original sketch.
