BACON, G.W. (George Washington), 1830-1922 – publisher : THE NEW MAP OF EPPING FOREST.

London : G. W. Bacon & Co., 1905. A clearly presented map of Epping Forest of a scale of two-and-one-quarter inches to the mile. The map extends from Epping in the north to Lea Bridge and Leytonstone in the south, encompassing the whole of the forest and also taking in Chingford, Walthamstow, Theydon Bois, Loughton, Buckhurst Hill, Woodford and Snaresbrook.
Lithograph on paper with original handcolour. Printed surface 630 x 270mm (approx 24-3/4” x 10-3/4”). Mounted on cloth and folding into the original cloth wrappers. Wrappers lightly rubbed; some minor wear to folds, but overall in good condition. No copy of this edition located in any major library worldwide.

London : G. W. Bacon, [ca.1925]. A separately published map of Epping Forest and the adjacent Buckhurst Hill, Chingford, Higham Hill, Highams Park, Leytonstone, Loughton, Theydon Bois, Walthamstow, Wanstead, Woodford, etc., at a scale of two inches to the mile.
Lithograph on paper, with printed colour. Printed surface 568 x 257mm (approx. 22-3/8” x 9-7/8”). Dissected, mounted on linen, and folding into a cloth case lettered “Epping Forest” in manuscript. Case worn and split; some very minor rubbing and wear, but otherwise in very good state. Manuscript note to map concerning the restoration of All Saints at Chingford.

An attractive antique print – the remains of the mediaeval Augustinian priory church north of Epping – abandoned in the sixteenth century and here converted for agricultural use. Engraved by Samuel Turner Sparrow (fl.1773-1810) and originally produced for Francis Grose’s serially published “The Antiquities of England & Wales” (London : 1774-1787).
