[London : for A. Churchill, J. Knapton and others, 1720]. A fine antique map of the area to the west of the City of London, the area lying beyond the old wall - High Holborn across to Newgate and Smithfield, Fleet Street and Ludgate Hill, Chancery Lane down to Temple Bar, the Temple and the river, Fetter Lane, Shoe Lane, Old Bailey, etc. The map is decorated with a simple curtain title-piece and the names of 149 smaller side-streets and alleys are given in a numbered key. Originally produced by Richard Blome in the late seventeenth century, the map remained unpublished until the present version (with his name erased) appeared with the 1720 edition of John Stow's "Survey of London".
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 295 x 352mm (approx. 11-5/8" x 13-7/8"). Original vertical fold, some faint offsetting, but overall in very good state. A guaranteed genuine antique map. Adams 25/043. Hyde (Ward Maps) 78/1.

An attractive antique map of Farringdon Ward Without at the western edge of the City of London, including Holborn, Fleet Street and the roads between - as well as Smithfield and the surrounding area. The map is decorated with a rococo cartouche and the arms of the celebrated politician and libertarian, John Wilkes (1725-1797), who became alderman for the ward in 1769. Originally produced for the "London Magazine" in July 1772. Other maps in this series were engraved by Thomas Bowen and this would also appear to be his work.
Copper line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 166 x 220mm (approx. 6-1/2" x 8-5/8"). Very faint old vertical folds, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map. Hyde (Ward Maps) 80/1.
