An extremely rare and early print of Battersea – the parish church of St. Mary prominent to the left, cottages and houses by the river beyond, a windmill in the distance, men fishing on the opposite bank. Engraved by Elisha Kirkall (1682?-1742) from an original study by the naturalist Eleazar Albin (fl.1708-1741). The second state of the plate, with Albin’s name partially erased.
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 150 x 219mm (5-7/8” x 8-5/8”). Trimmed tight to neatlines; minor damage and minuscule loss to blank lower left-hand corner; slight evidence of removal from album on verso; a few minor marks, but still an attractive example. Engraved by Edward Francis Finden (1791-1857) from an original drawing by William Westall A.R.A. Originally produced for the part-work series “Great Britain Illustrated” (London : 1828-1830).
Steel line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 101 x 137mm (approx. 4” x 5-3/8”). A few tiny specks, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

ANTIQUE PRINT: THE INFANT ORPHAN ASYLUM SNARESBROOK ESSEX.

WRAY, Alfred Hughgoo, 1822-1892 : THE INFANT ORPHAN ASYLUM SNARESBROOK ESSEX.

[London : 1860 (or earlier)]. A very pleasant antique print of the imposing building south of Eagle Pond – originally built as the Infant Orphan Asylum in 1843, later becoming the Royal Wanstead School, and later still Snaresbrook Crown Court. A view from the water (with a man fishing in the foreground) engraved by J. Davies from an original study by Alfred H. Wray. Originally produced for Thomas Dugdale’s part-work survey published as “The Curiosities of Great Britain” or “England Delineated” in various formats between 1838 and 1860.
Steel line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 99 x 138mm (approx. 3-7/8” x 5-1/2”). Diagonal crease to lower left-hand margin, not affecting image, but otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.
