London : Richard Phillips, 1804. An interesting and uncommon antique print - a diminutive chimney-sweep, brush in hand, bag of soot on back, outside the Foundling Hospital in Guilford Street. The greater part of the profit arose from the sale of the soot for manure. The brass plate on the boy's cap had boldly engraved upon it the name and address of his master - an early measure intended to promote the more humane treatment of these orphan boys from the workhouse. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte. Originally produced for Phillips' part-work "Modern London : Being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis" (London : 1804).
Etching, line and stipple engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface (including quadruple-rule outer border) 132 x 104mm (approx. 5-1/4" x 4-1/8"). Some very mild spotting to outer border and margins, but otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 89/030.

[London : Cassell & Co., 1878]. An attractive antique print of the old Foundling Hospital - a gardener mows the lawns, a group of girls with a hoop sit by a tree. Originally produced as a supplementary presentation plate to the part-work "Old and New London" (London : 1873-1878).

[London : John Tallis & Co., 1852]. A very pleasant small antique print - the facade and wings of the old Foundling Hospital in Coram's Fields. An engraving from the workshop of A.H.Payne, originally produced for Payne's "Illustrated London, or a Series of Views in the British Metropolis and its Vicinity" (London : 1846-1847), and here in a slightly later impression.

Engraved by Josiah Henshall (fl.1827-1863) from an original study by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of 19th century London. From Shepherd's part-work series "London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century" (London 1829-1832).

Engraved by John Green (fl.1754-1761) from an original study by the painter and illustrator Samuel Wale, first Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy.
