[London : Richard Phillips, 1804]. An attractive and unusual antique print - a street-vendor cries his water-cress at a penny a bunch in Hanover Square. The large house behind him is the town-house of Lord Harewood. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte. Originally produced for Phillips' part-work "Modern London : Being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis" (London : 1804), but here in a slightly later impression with the outer ruled border, imprint and credit burnished out.
Etching, line and stipple engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface (including double-rule outer border) 118 x 81mm (approx. 4-3/4" x 3-1/4"). Tiny mark in sky, blank margins rather spotted, but the image otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 89/054 - not listing this variant.

Engraved by Henry Melville (fl.1826-1844) from an original study by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1793-1864) and originally produced for the part-work "London Interiors : A Grand National Exhibition" (London 1841-1844).

Engraved by William Deeble (1794?-1861) from an original study by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of nineteenth-century London.
