HORREBOW, Niels, 1712-1760 : [MAP OF ICELAND] CARTE DE L'ISLANDE, POUR SERVIR À LA CONTINUÁTION DE L'HISTOIRE GÉNÉRALE DES VOYAGES. DRESSÉE SUR CELLE DE M. HORREBOWS. [Paris : 1770]. A handsome eighteenth century map of Iceland, based on the work of the Danish lawyer Niels Horrebow, who was sent to Iceland by the Danish king in 1749-1751 to conduct a general economic and geographic survey. The present French version of his map was originally produced for Prevost's "Histoire Generale des Voyages" (Paris 1746-1770). The striking and boldly engraved image of the island is complemented by a pretty rococo cartouche and a compass rose, while an explanatory panel defines the terms "jokul" and "syssel", etc. £300 To confirm availability and to purchase this map please note the stock number 18513 and go to the database.
