ANTIQUE MAP : [MAP OF ICELAND] CARTE DE L'ISLANDE, POUR SERVIR À LA CONTINUÁTION DE L'HISTOIRE GÉNÉRALE DES VOYAGES. DRESSÉE SUR CELLE DE M. HORREBOWS.

HORREBOW, Niels, 1712-1760 : [MAP OF ICELAND] CARTE DE L'ISLANDE, POUR SERVIR À LA CONTINUÁTION DE L'HISTOIRE GÉNÉRALE DES VOYAGES. DRESSÉE SUR CELLE DE M. HORREBOWS.

[Paris : 1770]. A handsome eighteenth century map of Iceland, based on the work of the Danish lawyer Niels Horrebow, who was sent to Iceland by the Danish king in 1749-1751 to conduct a general economic and geographic survey. The present French version of his map was originally produced for Prevost's "Histoire Generale des Voyages" (Paris 1746-1770). The striking and boldly engraved image of the island is complemented by a pretty rococo cartouche and a compass rose, while an explanatory panel defines the terms "jokul" and "syssel", etc.
Copper line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 305 x 380mm (12" x 14-7/8"). Faint old folds, but otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map.
