BACON, G.W. (George Washington), 1830-1922 : BACON'S NEW MAP OF LONDON, DIVIDED INTO HALF MILE SQUARES & CIRCLES.

London : G.W.Bacon, [ca.1890]. A popular and very clearly designed map of Victorian London, issued in various formats by George Washington Bacon from the mid 1870s onwards. The present edition, showing Tower Bridge, is dated to about 1890. The map shows central London on a scale of four inches to the mile - from West Kensington in the west across to the West India Docks in the east, and from Hampstead down to North Brixton and Camberwell. The case and the verso of the map offer a fine array of contemporary advertisements.
Lithograph on paper. Original hand colour. Printed surface 665 x 822mm (approx. 26-1/4" x 32-3/8"). Folding into the original cloth case with colour-printed labels; seemingly lacking an inserted index; one unobtrusive tear; some slight splits to folds; minor wear to case, but a good copy of a fragile item. A guaranteed genuine antique map. Hyde 160/C2.

ANTIQUE MAP : LONDON. 1857. DRAWN & ENGRAVED EXPRESSLY FOR THE POST OFFICE LONDON DIRECTORY.

[DAVIES, Benjamin Rees, 1789?-1872] : LONDON. 1857. DRAWN & ENGRAVED EXPRESSLY FOR THE POST OFFICE LONDON DIRECTORY.

London : Kelly & Co., 1857. An unusual mid nineteenth-century map of London - fitted with the tape-indicator recently patented by the German-born stationer Joseph Schlesinger and "enabling any place to be found on the map with mathematical certainty". Although tape-indicator maps from the latter part of the nineteenth-century are not uncommon, examples from the mid-century undoubtedly are. Examples from 1854 are recorded, but this is the earliest we have seen on the open market. The map itself (originally published in 1847) covers London from Bayswater across to Canning Town, and from Dalston down to Camberwell, on a scale of three inches to the mile, shows the newly introduced postal districts, and comes with a 46pp index giving the co-ordinates and instructions for using the tape-indicator. Cover title, "Post Office Directory Map of London with Patent Index".
Lithograph on paper, with printed linen tape attached on a metal rivet. Printed surface 383 x 671mm (approx. 15-1/8" x 26-3/8"). Folding into the original cloth case, with 46,[ii]pp printed index also inserted. Map a little worn, with some creasing, short splits and slight tears, but the case and tape very good and overall a pleasant example of a scarce and fragile production. A guaranteed genuine antique map. Hyde D&H 404.(6).

ANTIQUE MAP : THE COUNTRY TWENTY-FIVE MILES ROUND LONDON, PLANNED FROM A SCALE OF ONE MILE TO AN INCH.

FADEN, William, 1749-1836 : THE COUNTRY TWENTY-FIVE MILES ROUND LONDON, PLANNED FROM A SCALE OF ONE MILE TO AN INCH.

London : W. Faden, 1802. The third edition of this large and handsome map of the Greater London area - extending on a one-inch scale northwards to take in Tring and Hertford, east to Chelmsford and Basildon, south to Tonbridge, Dorking and Guildford, and west beyond Beaconsfield and Windsor. Faden was a maker of serious maps for serious purposes - "the turnpike roads are all laid down from an actual measurement with a perambulator" - and this map, originally published in 1788, was the best of its period. It was regularly updated and remained in print until at least 1880.
Copper line engraving on paper, with full original hand colour. Engraved surface 1033 x 1254mm (approx. 40-5/8" x 49-1/4"). Dissected and mounted on linen, and folding to 220 x 178mm. One tiny hole to linen joints; minor discolouration to outer folds of the linen backing, but the map itself in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map. Howgego 188/6.

[FADEN, William, 1749-1836] : A NEW MAP OF THE COUNTRY TWENTY-FIVE MILES ROUND LONDON.

London : James Wyld, [ca.1869]. A large and handsome map of the Greater London area - extending on a one-inch scale northwards to take in Tring and Hertford, east to Chelmsford and Basildon, south to Tonbridge, Dorking and Guildford, and west beyond Beaconsfield and Windsor. Originally published by William Faden in 1788, but here much modified and updated to show the latest extensions to the railway system, etc.
Line engraving on paper, with original hand colour. Engraved surface 1035 x 1282mm (approx. 40-3/4" x 50-1/2"). Dissected, mounted on linen, and folding into the original cloth slip-case, with Wyld's engraved label; case a little worn, but in the map in very good state. Hyde D&H 188.(2).

ANTIQUE MAP : THE

SAMPSON LOW, MARSTON & CO. - publishers : THE "DISTRICT RAILWAY" MAP OF LONDON.

London : Sampson Low, Marston & Co., [1898]. Sixth edition. A handsome map of late Victorian London on a scale of roughly three and three-quarter inches to the mile, extending north to Haverstock Hill, east to Stepney, south to Clapham Common, and west to Ealing Broadway. The primary emphasis is on the London railway system, with the emerging underground system overlaid in bright red on a detailed street-plan, the overground and electric railways in blue, together with all the proposed extensions, the connecting omnibus routes, etc. The area from Putney Bridge to Wimbledon covered by the District Line is separately shown in an inset. The map was first published some twenty years earlier and continued to be regularly updated on into the twentieth century.
Coloured lithograph on paper. Printed surface 670 x 1035mm (approx. 26-1/4" x 40-3/4"). Mounted on linen and folding into the original pictorial card case; map a little tanned, with some wear and some minor loss at folds; pinholes at corners, suggestive of prolonged working life and display; the card case worn, broken and split, with remains of crude repairs; but overall a good and still attractive map. With the assertive pencilled ownership inscription of G. M. Powell of 57 Charterhouse Street on verso of map. Hyde 176.(8).

ANTIQUE PRINT: ENVIRONS OF LONDON.

SMITH, W.H. (William Henry) & SON - publishers : ENVIRONS OF LONDON.

London : W.H.Smith & Son, [1879?]. A nicely detailed Victorian map of the whole of the Greater London area on a scale of one-inch to the mile - extending east-west from Chadwell Heath to Windsor, and north-south from Potters Bar to Ashstead. Undated, but evidently completed before the extension of the District Railway to Putney Bridge in 1880.
Line engraving on paper. Full original hand colour. Engraved surface 726 x 827mm (approx. 28-5/8" x 32-5/8"). Mounted on linen and folding into the original publishers' cloth case, with paper labels; splits to two panels; some wear and slight holing to folds; slight wear to case; linen backing a little tanned and spotted; but still an attractive copy of a fragile production. Hyde 171 - seemingly an intermediate state between 171/1 and 171/2.

ANTIQUE MAP : STANFORD'S MAP OF THE COUNTY OF LONDON, ACCORDING TO THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT. 1888.

STANFORD, Edward, 1827-1904 : STANFORD'S MAP OF THE COUNTY OF LONDON, ACCORDING TO THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT. 1888.

London : Edward Stanford, 1889. An attractive and highly useful map of late Victorian London - extending from Crouch End and Snaresbrook in the north to Anerley in the south, and from Kew across to Plumstead Marshes. Giving good detail on a scale of two inches to the mile, the map is particularly important in showing the electoral divisions and the urban sanitary and road authorities as reconstituted after the great overhaul of London's government represented in the formation of the London County Council in 1888 - the most ambitious municipal authority then conceived. Stanford's base-map had first appeared some twenty years earlier to show the Metropolitan Board of Works area and, although independently produced, the successive versions of the map were widely used both by the MBW and the LCC and came to have a quasi-official status as London Government Maps.
Lithograph on paper, with original hand colour. Printed surface 670 x 1001mm (approx. 26-1/2" x 39-1/2"). Dissected, mounted on linen and folding into purple roan guards with a manuscript label; some minor external wear; small area of discolouration at eastern edge of map; one small nicks and a slight hole to folds, but otherwise in very good state. Hyde 105.(17).

London : John Wallis, 1783. The first appearance of this attractive circular map - the terrain measured out in radiating mile circles - and extending south to Crowhurst, west to Slough, north to Ware, and east to Tilbury.
Copper line engraving on paper, with original hand colour. Engraved surface 590 x 585mm (approx. 23-1/4" x 23"). Dissected into sixteen sections, now relaid on archival paper, with the original linen backing (with a 1784 ownership inscription) separately preserved; folding into the original marbled slip-case, with the oval engraved label of the Piccadilly printseller, Samuel William Fores; case rubbed and restored, but the relaid map in very good state. Howgego 176.(1).
