BOWLES, Thomas : THE MONUMENT.

[London : 1735]. A finely worked antique print - the Monument and the adjacent buildings as they looked in the early eighteenth century - three tiny figures survey the view from the gallery. Engraved by Thomas Bowles (1712?-1762) and originally produced for the partwork publication "A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster .. . by Robert Seymour" (London 1733-1735) - Seymour being the pseudonym of John Mottley.
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 334 x 202mm (approx. 13-1/4" x 8"). Some very mild browning and faint creasing, but a very good and sharp impression. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 30/008.

DAYES, Edward, 1763-1809 : VIEW OF THE MONUMENT.

London : J. Stockdale, 1796. A handsome antique print of the Monument and Fish Street Hill - a view down the hill towards St. Magnus and old London Bridge. Engraved by Philip Audinet (1766-1837) from an original study by the landscape painter Edward Dayes. Originally produced for Henry Hunter's part-work "The History of London and its Environs" published serially between 1796 and 1811.
Copper line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 259 x 169mm (approx. 10-1/8" x 6-5/8"). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 107/007.

London : Hurst Robinson & Co., 1825. A handsome antique print - a a delicately worked view down Fish Street Hill with the Monument and St. Magnus beyond. Engraved by Charles Heath (1785-1848) from an original study by De Wint and originally produced for the never-completed and scarce part-work series "Views of London".
Steel line engraving on india paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 143 x 80mm (approx. 5-5/8" x 3-1/8"). A couple of faint spots to outer margin, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 147/026.

[London : ca.1765]. An attractive and uncommon antique print - a view of the Monument and Fish Street Hill in the mid eighteenth century. Engraved by James Hulett (fl.1742-1767) and originally produced to accompany the "Royal Magazine" - a periodical published monthly between 1759 and 1771.
Copper line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 179 x 99mm (approx. 7" x 3-7/8"). One small mark, but in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

A handsome antique print - a late eighteenth century vue d'optique or perspective view (without the customary lateral inversion) - offering a view of Fish Street Hill and the Monument, with St. Magnus the Martyr in the distance - the foreground alive with workaday activity.
Copper line engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface 295 x 407mm (approx. 11-5/8" x 16"). A few faint marks, but a very good, crisp and clean copy indeed. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

[London : ca.1800]. An interesting and very early antique print of the Monument, erected between 1671 and 1676. The print, its title carried on a flamboyant swallow-tailed and tasselled banderole, was originally published about 1690 in the Morden & Lea series "The Prospects of London", but is here in a late eighteenth or early nineteenth-century impression on wove paper.

[London : 1756]. A fine large eighteenth century engraving of the Monument and the surrounding buildings by Sutton Nicholls (fl.1689-1729). Originally engraved for the printseller John Bowles in the 1720s and here in a later impression produced for the part-work edition of John Stow, "A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster" (London 1754-1757).
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 440 x 335mm (approx. 17-1/2" x 13"). Two slight horizontal creases, a few very faint marks, but in very good state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 29/040.

[London : Jones & Co., 1831]. A charming antique print - a lively street scene with Fish Street Hill, the Monument, St. Magnus the Martyr and the approach to old London Bridge. Engraved [by Samuel Lacey (fl.1810-1846)] from an original drawing (now in Westminster Public Library) by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd , the master recorder of 19th century London. Originally produced for Shepherd's part-work series "London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century" (London 1829-1832).

[London : 1772]. A handsome antique print of the Monument, erected on Fish Street Hill as memorial to the Great Fire of London of 1666. Originally engraved by William Henry Toms (fl.1723-1758) for William Maitland's "The History of London, from its Foundation" (London 1739), and here in a slightly later impression (with Toms' name burnished out) dating from 1772.
