ANTIQUE MAP : [MAP OF NORTHUMBERLAND] COMITATVS NORTHVMBRIA ; VERNACULE NORTHUMBERLAND.

BLAEU, Joan Willem, 1598-1673 : [MAP OF NORTHUMBERLAND] COMITATVS NORTHVMBRIA ; VERNACULE NORTHUMBERLAND.

[Amsterdam : 1645 (or later)]. A fine antique map of the county by the Dutch master mapmaker, Joan Willem Blaeu. Undoubtedly one of the most attractive of all early maps of the county, decorated with shields, the royal arms, a draped title-piece, ships, cherubs, and an attractive scale-bar showing a seventeenth century surveyor at work.
Copper line engraving on paper. Full contemporary hand colour. Engraved surface 407 x 494mm (approx. 16-1/8" x 19-3/8"). Slight furl to central fold, but in very good and clean state indeed. A guaranteed genuine antique map.

ANTIQUE MAP : NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE & GATESHEAD.

COLE, G. & ROPER, John : NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE & GATESHEAD.

London : Vernor, Hood & Sharpe, 1808. A neatly worked and detailed town plan of Newcastle as it stood at the beginning of the nineteeth century. Engraved by John Roper (fl.1792-1810) from a draught by G. Cole - probably the surveyor George Cole of Soho. The map is decorated with the town's coat of arms and a view of St. Nicholas - the latter separately engraved by John Roffe (1769-1850) from an original study by James Robert Thompson (fl.1806-1848). Originally produced to accompany the part-work "Beauties of England and Wales" (London : 1801-1818).
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 182 x 234mm (approx. 7-1/4" x 9-1/4"). Two faint surface creases, but otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

ANTIQUE MAP : NORTHUMBERLAND.

MORDEN, Robert, fl.1668-1703 : NORTHUMBERLAND.

[London] : sold by Abel Swale, Awnsham & Iohn Churchill, [1722]. A handsome antique map of the county, with a wreath and ribbon cartouche, by the London mapmaker Robert Morden (fl.1667-1703). When they were first published in 1695, Morden's county maps were advertised as being "much the fairest and most correct of any that have yet appear'd". The help of "knowing gentlemen" in each county had been sought "to supply the defects, rectifie the positions, and correct false spellings". Originally produced for the 1695 edition of Camden's "Britannia". The present edition is dated to 1722.
Copper line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 420 x 356mm (approx. 16-1/2" x 14"). The faintest hint of offsetting, but still in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map.

ANTIQUE MAP : NORTHUMBERLAND.

MORDEN, Robert, fl.1668-1703 : NORTHUMBERLAND.

[London] : sold by Abel Swale, Awnsham & Iohn Churchil, [1695]. A rare separately published state of the first issue of Morden's map of the county, originally produced for the 1695 edition of "Camden's Britannia", but here dissected, mounted on linen, and folding into (eighteenth century) marbled guards, with a manuscript label. Morden's maps from this series have not previously been recorded in this form. On their first appearance they were advertised as being "much the fairest and most correct of any that have yet appear'd" and the help of "knowing gentlemen" in each part of the country had been sought "to supply the defects, rectifie the positions, and correct false spellings".
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 420 x 355mm (approx. 16-1/2" x 14"). Some mild tanning and discolouration; faint wear to edges; paper lifting from linen in places, but in very good state for an ephemeral item of this type.
