London : J. Cary, 1786. A neatly worked late eighteenth-century map of the area - centred on Southall, with Greenford and Northolt to the north; Norwood Green, Lampton and Hounslow to the south; and Heston, Hanwell and Osterley Park prominent to the east. One of the fifty sections of "Cary's Actual Survey of the Country Fifteen Miles round London, on a Scale of One Inch to a Mile" (London : 1786). Sir George Fordham wrote of Cary as the prototype of the modern mapmaker, "the most prominent and successful exponent of his time", the cartographer who "first combined care and beauty of design, with something really approximate to geographical accuracy".
Copper line engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface 158 x 92mm (approx. 6-1/4" x 3-5/8"). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map.

Originally engraved for Samuel Woodburn's partwork "Ecclesiastical Topography. A Collection of One Hundred Views of Churches in the Environs of London" (London : 1807-[1810]).
