PRIOR, William Henry, 1812-1882 : PORTOBELLO FARM, 1830. [London : 1878 (or later)]. An attractive antique print of the eighteenth century farmhouse (named in honour of Admiral Vernon's capture of Porto Bello from the Spanish in 1739) that gave its name to the Portobello Road. Engraved by Joseph Swain (1820-1909) from a study (based on earlier sources) by William Henry Prior. Originally produced for the part-work "Old and New London" (London : 1873-1878). A handsome and unusual bird's-eye view of the length of what is now the Bayswater Road, looking westwards from Marble Arch - with the adjacent streets and buildings - Hyde Park and Connaught Street in the foreground, the Serpentine, Westbourne Terrace and Paddington Station in the middle distance, and Notting Hill Gate and Kensington Park Road in the distance.
