ANTIQUE PRINT: NEWGATE : GREEN HASTEDS!

CRAIG, William Marshall : NEWGATE : GREEN HASTEDS!

London : Richard Phillips, 1804. An attractive and unusual antique print - a barrow boy sells 'hasteds' (or more usually 'hastens') outside the grim walls of Newgate Gaol. Hastens were strictly speaking the earliest variety of green pea to come into season - and those forced in hothouses to be the first of the summer commanded a premium price - but the name was also used indiscriminately by the barrow-boys to cover the cheaper and more plentiful later varieties. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte. Originally produced for Phillips' part-work "Modern London : Being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis" (London : 1804) .
Aquatint, line and stipple engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface (including quadruple-rule outer border) 132 x 102mm (approx. 5-1/4" x 4"). A few trifling marks, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 89/035.

ANTIQUE PRINT: CENTRAL CRIMINAL COURT, OLD BAILEY.

SHEPHERD, Thomas Hosmer, 1793-1864 : CENTRAL CRIMINAL COURT, OLD BAILEY.

[London : 1842]. A highly attractive antique print - a lively courtroom scene in the interior of the famous Central Criminal Court of the Old Bailey. The view depicts a "hardened burglar" in the dock, a neatly dressed woman giving evidence to the judges, spectators in the gallery and many white-wigged barristers in attendance. Engraved by Henry Melville (fl.1826-1844) from an original study by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd and originally produced for the part-work "London Interiors : A Grand National Exhibition" (London 1841-1844).
Steel line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 142 x 177mm (approx. 5-5/8" x 7"). Trimmed tight at foot, just touching the engraved title; some dusting and marking to blank margins; minor crease to lower blank margin, but the image itself in very good and clean state.
