GYFFORD, Edward, 1772-1834 : PADDINGTON.

London : J. Stratford, 1806. An early nineteenth-century antique print - the church of St. Mary by Paddington Green, designed by John Plaw and completed in 1791. Engraved by Ambrose William Warren (fl.1805-1856) from an original drawing by Edward Gyfford. Originally produced for James Stratford's part-work series "London; being an Accurate History and Description of the British Metropolis and its Neighbourhood ... by David Hughson" (London : 1805-1810). "Hughson" was in fact the pseudonym of David Pugh.
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 110 x 162mm (approx. 4-3/8" x 6-3/8"). Very faint diagonal crease just touching top right-hand corner, but otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

[London : 1878]. A clear and elegant antique print of the grand hotel by Paddington Station - designed by Philip Hardwick and opened in 1854. Engraved by the Dutch-born artist-engraver Leopold H. Lowenstam and originally produced as a supplementary presentation plate to the part-work "Old and New London" (London : 1873-1878).

A handsome and unusual bird's-eye view of the length of the Edgware Road northwards from Oxford Street and Connaught Place - with the adjacent streets and buildings - the Marble Arch in the foreground, Norfolk Crescent and Grand Junction Road (now Sussex Gardens) in the middle distance, and Paddington Station beyond. Engraved by George William Ruffle and originally produced for Herbert Fry's "London: Illustrated by Twenty Bird's Eye Views of the Principal Streets" (London : 1891).
Wood engraving on paper, with letter-press shoulder notes. Engraved surface 204 x 118mm (approx. 8-1/8" x 4-5/8"). Minor rubbing and three stitch-marks to the original vertical fold, but otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

A delightful antique print - a lively canal scene, with barges, a horse on the towpath, etc. Engraved by Samuel Lacey (fl.1810-1846) from an original pencil and watercolour drawing (now in the Museum of London) by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of nineteenth-century London. Originally produced for Shepherd's series "Metropolitan Improvements; or London in the Nineteenth Century" (London : 1827-1830).
Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 96 x 152mm (approx. 3-7/8" x 6"). Faint and tiny mark in lower margin, but otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 154/078.
