[London : 1878 (or later)]. An attractive antique print – a part of Pall Mall in the 1830s. Some prominence is given to the premises of the Vulliamy family of clockmakers – at this time headed by Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy – the royal arms of the Clockmakers to the Crown visible above the door. Engraved by “W.H.” – of the several wood engravers with these initials working in London in the 1870s, perhaps the most likely is William Harcourt Hooper. Originally produced for the part-work “Old and New London” (London : 1873-1878).

The column, designed by Benjamin Wyatt and topped by Sir Richard Westmacott’s 1834 statue of the Duke, is shown from Carlton House Terrace. The foreground displays a handsome array of contemporary costume. Engraved by John Woods (fl.1835-1855) from a drawing by the landscape-painter John Francis Salmon. An elegant antique print – the recently erected Suffolk Street running northwards off Pall Mall East – visitors arriving at the well-known exhibition of the Royal Society of British Artists at the centre – Price’s Italian Warehouse to the right. Engraved by Henry Winsor Bond (1804-1881) from an original study by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd. From Shepherd’s part-work series “Metropolitan Improvements; or London in the Nineteenth Century” (London : 1827-1830).
