CHAMBERS, George, 1803-1840 : CITY OF LONDON. MANSION HOUSE, POULTRY AND PRINCES STREET.

London : John Robins, [ca. 1840 (but later)]. A large and handsome engraving of the heart of the City of London – bustle, traffic and the new London omnibuses prominent – a detachment of guards march away from the Bank of England. Originally engraved by Thomas Abiel Prior (1809-1866) as part of the Stationers’ Almanack series and here in a late (second half of the twentieth century) impression from the original plate.
Steel line engraving on paper. Contemporary hand colour. Engraved surface 222 x 407mm (approx. 8-3/4” x 16”). In very good and clean state.

Shrewsbury : C. Hulbert, [ca.1810]. An uncommon antique print of the imposing facade. Probably produced earlier elsewhere, but here in a later impression with the imprint of Charles Hulbert of Shrewbury.

[London : Vernor, Hood & Sharpe, 1811]. An attractive small antique print – the facade of Grocers’ Hall. Engraved by Robert Sands and originally produced for the part-work “Beauties of England and Wales” (1801-1816).

London : J. Booth, 1812. A handsome antique print – a busy scene of the Poultry in the early nineteenth century, with the old Wren church of St. Mildred – long since demolished. Engraved by Joseph Skelton (1783-1871) from an original drawing by George Sidney Shepherd. Originally produced for the part-work series “Architectura Ecclesiastica Londini; being a Series of Views” (London : 1810-1823) – “the first artistically competent and exhaustive illustration of the golden age of London church building” (Adams). Below the image are several lines of explanatory text.

[London : Jones & Co., 1831]. An attractive antique print – the early nineteenth-century hall from the courtyard, man with dog and stick on the lawn. Engraved by William Radclyffe (1783-1855) from an original study (now in the Museum of London) by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of nineteenth-century London. From Shepherd’s series “London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century” (London : 1829-1832).

SHEPHERD, Thomas Hosmer, 1793-1864 : ST. MILDRED, POULTRY.

London : Jones & Co., [1831]. An antique print – a pleasant view of the busy street and the old Wren church on the north side of the Poultry. Opposite the church, the premises and sign of [Robert] Maynard & Co., outfitters and agents, at 27 Poultry are given some prominence to the left of the print. Engraved by James Gough (1799-1889) from an original study by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of nineteenth-century London. Originally produced for Shepherd’s part-work series “London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century” (1829-1832).
Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 113 x 145mm (approx. 4-1/2” x 5-3/4”). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 161/133.
