A most attractive antique print - the Italianate eighteenth-century house at Roehampton from the gardens - a gardener with brush and basket hard at work. The building now forms part of Roehampton University. Engraved by Thomas Abiel Prior (1809-1866) from an original study by the gifted Thomas Allom. [ENGLISH SCHOOL] : ROEHAMPTON PRIORY. SURREY. [London : 1860]. A charming small antique print - the exterior of the gothic house at Roehampton - "the fine seat of the late Lord Justice Sir J. Knight Bruce, has been converted into a private lunatic asylum" (James Thorne, 1876). The building is nowadays known as the Priory Hospital. Originally produced for Thomas Dugdale's part-work survey published as "The Curiosities of Great Britain" or "England Delineated" in various formats between 1838 and 1860. SOLD |
