[CRAIG, William Marshall] : SHOREDITCH CHURCH : HAIR BROOMS.

[London : Richard Phillips, 1804]. An attractive antique print - in front of St. Leonard's Shoreditch an itinerant turner cries his brooms, brushes, bowls, a sieve and even a clothes-horse. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte. Originally produced for Phillips' part-work "Modern London : Being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis" (London : 1804), but here in a slightly later impression with the outer ruled border, imprint and credit burnished out.
Etching and line engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface (including double-rule outer border) 118 x 80mm (approx. 4-5/8" x 3-1/8"). A few small marks to outer blank margins, but otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 89/036 - not listing this variant.

London : Richard Phillips, 1804. An attractive and unusual antique print - an itinerant street-seller sells his rush and osier baskets in Tabernacle Street, just north of Finsbury Square. Behind him is George Whitefield's octagonal Methodist chapel, at the corner of Leonard Street. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte. Originally produced for Phillips' part-work "Modern London : Being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis" (London : 1804).
Line and stipple engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface (including quadruple-rule outer border) 132 x 101mm (approx. 5-1/4" x 4"). A few faint marks and minor discolourations, but overall in very good state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 89/026.

An attractive eighteenth century map of the area lying just to the north of the City of London, extending from the lower end of the Goswell Road along Old Street to Shoreditch High Street and including Chiswell Street, Upper Moorfields (the site of the present Finsbury Square), the Artillery (H.A.C.) Ground, Bunhill Fields and Hoxton Square. Originally published in 1720, the present (slightly revised) version of the map was produced for the 1754-1756 edition of John Stow's "Survey of London".
Copper line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 284 x 349mm (approx. 11-1/4" x 13-3/4"). Faint old vertical folds, but in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map.
