ANTIQUE PRINT: SOHO SQUARE : CHAIRS TO MEND.

[CRAIG, William Marshall] : SOHO SQUARE : CHAIRS TO MEND.

[London : Richard Phillips, 1804]. An attractive antique print - outside a wine-merchant's premises in Soho Square a young woman with a baby in a sling holds a bundle of rushes. Her partner would be at work mending the rush-chairs of the local residents. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte. Originally produced for Phillips' part-work "Modern London : Being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis" (London : 1804), but here in a slightly later impression with the outer ruled border, imprint and credit burnished out.
Etching and line engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface (including double-rule outer border) 119 x 83mm (approx. 4-3/4" x 3-1/4"). A few small marks to outer blank margins, but otherwise in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 89/031 - not listing this variant.

ANTIQUE PRINT: GOLDEN SQUARE BREWERY.

[ENGLISH SCHOOL] : GOLDEN SQUARE BREWERY.

[London : 1878 (or later)]. An attractive and interesting antique print - in fact, despite the caption, the Lion Brewery on Broad Street (now Broadwick Street) rather than in Golden Square. The employees diet of beer saved them from the consequences of the cholera outbreak of 1854. Engraved from a study by William Henry Prior and originally produced for the part-work "Old and New London" (London : 1873-1878).
Wood engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 106 x 145mm (approx. 4-1/8" x 5-5/8"). Text on verso. In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.
