[CRAIG, William Marshall] : SOHO SQUARE : CHAIRS TO MEND. [London : Richard Phillips, 1804]. An attractive antique print - outside a wine-merchant's premises in Soho Square a young woman with a baby in a sling holds a bundle of rushes. Her partner would be at work mending the rush-chairs of the local residents. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte. The employees diet of beer saved them from the consequences of the cholera outbreak of 1854. An attractive antique print of Soho Square as originally laid out in the early eighteenth century - with passing carriages, etc. Engraved by "W. H." from an earlier source - of the several wood engravers with these initials working in London in the 1870s, perhaps the most likely is William Harcourt Hooper.
