[Leiden : Pieter van der Aa, 1727]. An engaging early eighteenth-century print of old Somerset House- a bird's eye view of the house and gardens from the river. Originally produced for Pieter van der Aa's publication "Les Délices de la Grand'Bretagne" (Leiden : 1707). The present edition is dated to 1727.
Etching and line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 124 x 153mm (approx. 4-7/8" x 6"). Faint old folds, but still in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 20/022.

[London : 1837 (but later)]. A very attractive antique print depicting the Strand busy with hurrying traffic - Somerset House to the right, St. Mary le Strand ahead. Engraved by William Edward Albutt (fl.1836-1863) from an original study by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"). Originally produced for John Woods' "History of London: Illustrated by Views in London and Westminster", first published in parts 1837-1838 and subsequently reissued in various guises.

Engraved by Thomas Clark (fl.1831-1855) and originally produced for the part-work series generally known as "The World's Metropolis, or Mighty London, Illustrated by a Series of Views Beautifully Engraved on Steel" (London 1851-1855).

[CRAIG, William Marshall] : SOMERSET HOUSE : SLIPPERS.

London : Richard Phillips, 1804. A charming antique print - an itinerant street vendor sells brightly-coloured morocco slippers by the west side of the Strand entrance to Somerset House. Wearing his national dress, this "venerable Turk" had been a familiar figure on the Strand, Cheapside and Cornhill for many years - respected for not harrying his potential customers, but simply showing his slippers. His prices ranged from one shilling and sixpence to two shillings per pair. The window to his left was that of the Royal Academy, then quartered at Somerset House. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte. Originally produced for Phillips' part-work "Modern London : Being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis" (London : 1804).
Aquatint, line and stipple engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface (including quadruple-rule outer border) 132 x 100mm (approx. 5-1/4" x 4"). Faint mark to outer blank margin, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 89/051.

FAIRHOLT, Frederick William, 1814-1866 : SOMERSET HOUSE. MEETING OF THE ROYAL ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY.

[London : J. Mead, 1844]. An attractive antique print depicting a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries, then occupying Somerset House. Portraits line the walls of the candle-lit room, there are books and papers on the central table and the Fellows engage in learned conversation. Engraved by Henry Melville (fl.1826-1844) after Frederick William Fairholt, himself elected a Fellow of the Society in the year the print was published. Originally produced for the part-work "London Interiors : A Grand National Exhibition" (London : 1841-1844).

"Hughson" was in fact the pseudonym of David Pugh.

[London : J. Johnston, 1820]. An attractive and unusual antique print - the naive and pedantic fictional character, Doctor Syntax, points out the finer points of art to a stout party while real life goes ignored. The scene is the Royal Academy summer exhibition, then still housed at Somerset House. Attributed to various artists, of whom the most likely is perhaps Charles Williams (fl.1797-1830). Originally produced for the partwork "The Tour of Doctor Syntax through London, or the Pleasures and Miseries of the Metropolis" (1820).
Aquatint on paper, with original hand colour. Engraved surface 121 x 188mm (approx. 4-3/4" x 7-3/8"). Some very faint discolouration to outer blank margins, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.
