[London : 1724 (but later)]. An attractive antique print of the old St. Thomas's Hospital - a bird's-eye view showing the successive courtyards. Originally published by John Bowles in 1724, but here in a later impression on wove paper datable to the early years of the nineteenth century. Engraved below the image are seven lines of text on the history of the hospital, etc.

[KIP, Johannes, 1652-1722] : ST. THOMAS HOSPITALL IN SOUTHWARK.

[London : for A. Churchill, J. Knapton ..., 1720]. A handsome antique print - a bird's-eye view of the interior courtyards of the old eighteenth-century St. Thomas's Hospital south of London Bridge. The engraving - the earliest recorded of the hospital - is generally ascribed to Johannes Kip, who engraved most of the other views in this series. Originally produced to accompany the 1720 edition of John Stow's "A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster" (London : 1720).
Copper line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 325 x 205mm (approx. 12-3/4" x 8"). Trimmed a little tight at right-hand margin, a few tiny marks and creases to outer blank margins, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 25/012.

Payne, originally produced for Payne's "Illustrated London, or a Series of Views in the British Metropolis and its Vicinity" (London : 1846-1847), and here in a slightly later impression.

SHEPHERD, George Sidney, 1784-1862 : ST. THOMAS'S SOUTHWARK.

London : J. Booth, 1814. A handsome antique print - an exterior view of the eighteenth-century church, now the Chapter House to Southwark Cathedral. Part of the tower was once used as an operating theatre for St. Thomas's Hospital. Engraved by William Wise (fl.1790-1818) from an original drawing (now in the British Museum) by George Sidney Shepherd. Originally produced for the part-work series "Architectura Ecclesiastica Londini; being a Series of Views" (London : 1810-1823) - "the first artistically competent and exhaustive illustration of the golden age of London church building" (Adams). Below the image are several lines of explanatory text.

From Shepherd's series "London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century" (London : 1829-1832).

A mid eighteenth-century print of the old hospital - the courtyard, a patient on crutches, etc. Engraved by William Elliott (1727-1766) from an original study by the painter and illustrator Samuel Wale, first Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy. Originally produced for Robert Dodsley's part-work compilation, "London and its Environs Described" (London : 1761).
