PEARSON, William : ST. ANTHOLINS WATLING ST. London : H. Setchel & Son, 1810. A handsome antique print - the exterior of the old Wren church in the heart of the City - pulled down in 1875. Engraved by W. Preston from an original drawing (now in the British Museum) by William Pearson (fl.1798-1813). Originally produced for the part-work series "Architectura Ecclesiastica Londini; being a Series of Views" (London : 1810-1823) - "the first artistically competent and exhaustive illustration of the golden age of London church building" (Adams). SHEPHERD, Thomas Hosmer, 1793-1864 : ST. ANTHOLIN, FROM WATLING STREET. [London : Jones & Co., 1830]. A charming antique print - a lively street scene looking eastwards along Watling Street towards the old Wren church and Budge Row, with a heavily laden wagon, pedestrians, etc. The church was pulled down in 1875, although part of the spire survives in the garden of Forest Hill Social Club. Engraved by Archelaus Cruse (1806-1861) from an original sketch (now in the Museum of London) by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of 19th century London.
