BILLINGS, Robert William, 1815-1874 : ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S, BY THE BANK. London : C. Tilt, 1837. A pleasant antique print giving an interior view of the old Wren church of St. Bartholomew by the Exchange, demolished in 1840-1841 to make way for the larger new Royal Exchange. It used to stand at the junction of Threadneedle Street and Bartholomew Lane. Engraved by John le Keux (1783-1846) from an original study by the painter and architect Robert William Billings. HOLLIS, George, 1793-1842 : [THREADNEEDLE STREET] CHURCHES OF ST. BARTHOLOMEW AND ST. BENET FINK, LONDON. London : 1840. An interesting and uncommon antique print - Threadneedle Street, the corner of the Bank of England and the two opposing Wren churches of St. Bartholomew-by-the-Exchange and St. Benet Fink - and to the right of the view clearance work on the rubble of the old Royal Exchange, destroyed by fire in 1838. Both churches were to disappear in the expansion and rebuilding on the Royal Exchange site. Originally produced to accompany the "Gentleman's Magazine" of May 1840. SOLD |

A well-worked antique print of the old Wren church at the corner of Bartholomew Lane and Threadneedle Street - an exterior view looking south towards the Royal Exchange. Engraved by Samuel Lacey (1786-1859) from an original drawing by George Sidney Shepherd. Originally produced for the part-work series "Architectura Ecclesiastica Londini; being a Series of Views" (London : 1810-1823) - "the first artistically competent and exhaustive illustration of the golden age of London church building" (Adams).
