AA, Pieter van der, 1659-1733 : ST. JAMES'S HOUSE.

[Leiden : Pieter van der Aa, 1727]. An early eighteenth century print - a bird's eye-view of St. James's Palace, the formal gardens, the Mall and St. James's Park. An imaginary parapet in the foreground bears the arms of Queen Anne. Originally produced for Pieter van der Aa's publication "Les Délices de la Grand'Bretagne" (Leiden : 1707). The present edition is dated to 1727.
Etching and line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 125 x 156mm (approx. 4-7/8" x 6-1/8"). Old folds, a few faint marks, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 20/024.

Engraved by James Stewart and John Burnet from a drawing by Burnet. Originally produced for the part-work "Beauties of England and Wales" (1801-1816).

CRAIG, William Marshall : ST. JAMES'S PLACE : CHERRIES.

London : Richard Phillips, 1804. A charming antique print - a barrow-woman cries her cherries in front of St. James's Palace. The cherries sold on the streets were usually the plentiful Kentish variety, followed in the summer season by the small black cherries known as blackaroons. The cry was usually "Cherries, Full Weight" - the scales seen above the barrow were notoriously unreliable. Other and more expensive varieties like the early season May Duke could only be had from the markets and shops. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig (fl.1788-1828), water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte. Originally produced for Phillips' part-work "Modern London : Being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis" (London : 1804).
Aquatint, line and stipple engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface (including quadruple-rule outer border) 130 x 102mm (approx. 5-1/8" x 4").
