A charming antique print - the old city church of St. Martin Outwich, standing at the corner of Threadneedle Street and Bishopsgate, with good detail of the adjacent houses. Engraved by the third James Basire and originally produced for "The Gentleman's Magazine: or, Monthly Intelligencer" for November 1809. SOLD |

COLE, Benjamin : THE NORTH EAST PROSPECT OF THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. MARTIN OUTWICH IN THREADNEEDLE STREET. [London : 1772]. A fine eighteenth-century print of the original St. Martin Outwich (burnt down in 1765), which used to stand on the corner of Bishopsgate and Threadneedle Street. Engraved by Benjamin Cole (fl.1723-1767) and originally produced for the part-work edition of William Maitland's "History of London" (London: 1753-1756), with the present impression dated to 1772. A handsome antique print - the old city church of St. Martin Outwich - Threadneedle Street to the right, Bishopsgate to the left. Engraved by Joseph Skelton (1781?-1850) from an original drawing (now in the British Museum) by George Sidney Shepherd. Originally produced for the part-work series "Architectura Ecclesiastica Londini; being a Series of Views" (London : 1810-1823) - "the first artistically competent and exhaustive illustration of the golden age of London church building" (Adams). Below the image are several lines of explanatory text. SOLD |

SHEPHERD, Thomas Hosmer, 1793-1864 : ST. MARTIN OUTWICH, BISHOPSGATE STREET. London : Jones & Co., 1830. A delightful antique print - a bustling street scene depicting the lower end of Bishopsgate and the turning into Threadneedle Street - a view from the north, with carriages, pedestrians and a heavily laden wagon. The little church of St. Martin Outwich in the centre of the view was built by Samuel Pepys Cockerell in 1796 and taken down in 1874. Engraved by Archelaus Cruse (1806-1861) from an original study by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of nineteenth-century London. From Shepherd's part-work series "London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century" (London : 1829-1832). SOLD |
