[London : W. S. Orr, 1837 (but later)]. A delightful antique print depicting the lower end of St. Martin’s le Grand, with the Post Office and St. Paul’s. Engraved by John Woods (fl.1835-1855) from a composite study by Hablot Knight Browne (“Phiz”) and Robert Garland. Originally produced for Woods’ “History of London: Illustrated by Views in London and Westminster”, first published in parts 1837-1838 and subsequently reissued in various guises.
Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 116 x 150mm (approx. 4-5/8” x 5-7/8”). A few tiny specks, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 188/019.

Originally produced for Thomas Dugdale’s part-work survey published as “The Curiosities of Great Britain” or “England Delineated” in various formats between 1838 and 1860.

An attractive antique print depicting the foot of St. Martin’s le Grand – St. Paul’s dominating the skyline and the old General Post Office built by Robert Smirke in 1829. A man in the foreground bears a placard somewhat incongruously advertising Thomas Barber’s “Isle of Wight” (1834). Originally produced for the Meyer family’s ambitious series “Universum oder abbildung und beschreibung des sehenswerthesten ... der natur und kunst” (1833-1860).
