[BOWEN, Thomas, 1733?-1790] : [CITY OF LONDON] ALDERSGATE WARD WITH IT'S DIVISIONS INTO PRECINCTS AND PARISHES AND THE LIBERTY OF ST. MARTINS LE GRAND, ACCORDING TO A NEW SURVEY.

[London : 1766]. An attractive antique map of the western fringe of the City of London, running from Barbican (now Beech Street) down to Newgate, via Aldersgate Street and St. Martin's le Grand, with Noble Street and Foster Lane to the east, and Little Britain to the west. The map is decorated with a rococo title-piece, the arms of George Nelson (the then alderman), views of the churches of St. Anne & St. Agnes and St. Botolph Aldersgate, and a compass rose. Originally produced for the "London Magazine" for April 1766. Other maps in this series were engraved by Thomas Bowen and this would also appear to be his work.
Copper line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 184 x 236mm (approx. 7-1/4" x 9-1/4"). Old and slight vertical folds, but in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map. Hyde (Ward Maps) 4/1.

[BROWNE, Hablot Knight, 1815-1882 & GARLAND, Robert] : THE GENERAL POST OFFICE ST MARTINS LE GRAND.

[London : 1837 (or later)]. A delightful antique print depicting the lower end of St. Martin's le Grand, with the Post Office and St. Paul's. Engraved by John Woods (fl.1835-1855) from a composite study by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz") and Robert Garland (d.1863). Originally produced for Woods' "History of London: Illustrated by Views in London and Westminster", first published in parts 1837-1838 and subsequently reissued in various guises.

A pleasant antique print of the old General Post Office (GPO East) at the foot of St. Martin's le Grand, built by Robert Smirke in 1829, with the corner of Gresham Street and a bustle of City traffic. Originally produced for Thomas Dugdale's part-work survey published as "The Curiosities of Great Britain" or "England Delineated" in various formats between 1838 and 1860.

Originally produced for the part-work "London Interiors : A Grand National Exhibition" (London : 1841-1844).

Guillaume & Cie. for the Leadenhall Press publication "London City" (1891).

A highly attractive antique print depicting the foot of St. Martin's le Grand - with St. Paul's dominating the skyline and the old General Post Office built by Robert Smirke in 1829. The street is busy with horse-drawn and pedestrian traffic, the Bank omnibus, etc. Engraved by John Woods (fl.1835-1855) from an original study by Samuel Read R.W.S., draughtsman, illustrator and painter. From the part-work series generally known as "The World's Metropolis, or Mighty London, Illustrated by a Series of Views Beautifully Engraved on Steel" (London 1851-1855).
