BACON, G.W. (George Washington), 1830-1922 - publisher : BACON'S MAP OF SUSSEX REVISED ACCORDING TO THE LATEST ORDNANCE SURVEY. DIVIDED INTO FIVE MILE SQUARES. London : G.W.Bacon & Co., [ca.1900]. A separately published map of the county intended for cyclists, marking both "hills to be ridden with caution" and "hills dangerous", including notes of recommended cycling routes, etc. On a scale of just over three miles to the inch, the map also includes large portions of Surrey (as far north as Croydon) and Kent (including Sevenoaks, Maidstone, etc). GREAM, Thomas : A TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP OF THE COUNTY OF SUSSEX; REDUCED FROM THE LARGE SURVEY IN FOUR SHEETS, BY THOMAS GREAM. London : W. Faden, 1799. The first edition of this handsome separately published map of Sussex, based on the William Gardner, Thomas Yeakell and Thomas Gream four-sheet map of 1795, and here in a reduction engraved by John Palmer with the scale reduced to four-tenths of an inch to the mile. [MOULE, Thomas, 1784-1851] : SUSSEX. [London : George Virtue, ca.1845]. One of the most attractive and popular of all antique maps of the county, originally engraved by William Schmollinger (fl.1831-1837) for Moule's part-work "English Counties Delineated" (London : 1830-1837). With a border of roses and shells, coats of arms, vignette views of Arundel, Brighton and Chichester, and various maritime motifs. Originally engraved in 1832, the present version, showing some development of the railway system, is dated to about 1845. SOLD |
