[London : Virtue & Co., 1881]. An attractive antique print – an interior view of the old church on Tooley Street – looking towards the pulpit. Engraved by James Harfield Kernot (1802-1858) from an original study by the gifted artist-architect Thomas Allom. Originally produced for the part-work “History of Surrey” (London 1840-1848) – and here in the later reissue published between 1878 and 1881.

[London : Privately published, 1824]. A scarce and handsome antique print of a bustling Tooley Street and the church of St. Olave. The wine-importer James Runicles stands beneath his bush to the right. Below the image is a simple ground plan of the church. Lithographed from a study by Charles Burton and originally produced for Charles Thomas Cracklow’s “Lithographic Views of all the Churches and Chapels of Ease in the County of Surrey” (1823-1824). Printed by Peter Simonau of Essex Street, off the Strand.
Lithograph on paper. Principal image area 190 x 193mm (approx. 7-1/2” x 7-5/8”). Paper a little browned with age; some small marks and spots, but otherwise in good state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

COLE, Benjamin, 1697?-1783 : THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. OLAVE, SOUTHWARK.

[London : 1756]. An attractive antique print – an eighteenth century engraving of the old church on Tooley Street – at that time recently rebuilt by Henry Flitcroft. The church stood on the site of Hay’s Wharf. Originally engraved by Benjamin Cole for the part-work edition of William Maitland’s “History of London” (London : 1753-1756).
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 184 x 234mm (approx. 7-1/4” x 9-1/4”). Cropped to neatlines, but in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 38/120B.

Engraved by Samuel Lacey (1786-1859) from an original study (now in the Museum of London) by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of nineteenth-century London. From Shepherd’s series “London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century” (London : 1829-1832).

ANTIQUE PRINT: THE TOWER SUBWAY.

WATKINS, Frank, 1834-1897 : THE TOWER SUBWAY.

[London : Cassell & Co., 1878 (or later)]. An antique print – the first London "tube" in that it was the world’s first underground transport system built in a tube rather than a brick-built tunnel. Running from Tower Hill to Tooley Street, the underground carriages ran for only three months in 1870 before the tunnel was converted for pedestrian use. Engraved by Benjamin Fleming (fl.1874-1878) from an original sketch by the London artist Frank Watkins. Originally produced for the part-work “Old and New London” (London : 1873-1878).
