WATKINS, Frank : THE TOWER SUBWAY. [London : Cassell & Co., 1878 (or later)]. An antique print - the first London "tube" in that it was the world's first underground transport system built in a tube rather than a brick-built tunnel. Running from Tower Hill to Tooley Street, the underground carriages ran for only three months in 1870 before the tunnel was converted for pedestrian use. Engraved by Benjamin Fleming (fl.1874-1878) from an original sketch by Frank Watkins (fl.1859-1894).
