SHEPHERD, Thomas Hosmer, 1793-1864 : [TRAFALGAR SQUARE] THE KING'S MEWS, CHARING CROSS. [London : Jones & Co., 1830]. An elegant antique print - the main stable block of the old King's Mews, built by William Kent in 1732 and here in its last days being used as a curious combination of store for public records (The National Repository) and as a Menagerie. In the foreground a man appears to be selling books from a table on the pavement. The Mews buildings were demolished in 1830 to make way for the laying out of Trafalgar Square - they stood on what is now the site of the National Gallery on the north side of the Square.
