A most attractive early eighteenth century map of Whitechapel, showing the High Street leading out to the Mile End Road, Wentworth ("Wentford") and Montague Streets to the north, Mansell Street and Leman ("Lemon") Street running south, crossed by Alie ("Ailiff") Street, Wellclose Square, etc. Inset is a smaller map of the tiny parish of St. Katherine's by the Tower, now largely replaced by St. Katherine's Dock. [SHEPHERD, Thomas Hosmer, 1793-1864] : HIGH STREET, WHITECHAPEL. [London : 1837]. A charming antique print depicting the High Street from the east, with the spire of St. Botolph Aldgate, the Monument and the City of London beyond. The street bustles with traffic - a coach-and-four, a trap, and heavily-laden wagons - and some prominence is given to the exterior of a local barber's shop with a fine barber's pole. Engraved by John Cox (fl.1834-1839) from an original drawing by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd and originally produced for John Woods' "History of London: Illustrated by Views in London and Westminster ...", first published in parts 1837-1838 and subsequently reissued in various guises.
