LONGMATE, Barak, 1738-1793 : ARMS OF THE CITY COMPANIES.
[London : R. Baldwin, 1773]. A handsome sequence of four plates, displaying 132 coats of arms – the City Livery Companies (the twelve great companies, followed by an alphabetical sequence from Apothecaries to Woolmen), as well as the trading companies (East India, Hudson’s Bay, South Sea, etc.), the Offices (Trinity House, Admiralty, etc.), the Inns of Court, the Colleges, the Societies (Artists of Great Britain, Free andAccepted Masons, etc.), the Hospitals, the Deaneries, etc. Engraved by the elder Barak Longmate, heraldic engraver and editor of “The Pocket Peerage”. Originally produced for John Noorthouck’s part-work “A New History of London including Westminster and Southwark” (1772-1773).
Four copper line engravings on paper. Engraved surface – each approx. 225 x 170mm (approx. 8-3/4” x 6-3/4”). A few faint marks and specks, but overall in very good and clean state. Guaranteed genuine antique prints.
