London : J. & F. Harwood, [ca.1840]. A rare and unusual antique print – an oval vignette view of Portsmouth from the sea. The engraving decorates a double-leaf of ornamental notepaper. Published by John & Frederick Harwood of Fenchurch Street, well known in their time for producing this kind of decorative stationery. [London : George Virtue, 1835]. An attractive map of the Portsmouth area, extending north to include Hambledon, east to beyond Bosham and the Witterings, west to Botley and Abshot, and south to take in Ryde and part of the coast of the Isle of Wight. Originally engraved in 1835 by John Crane Dower (1791?-1847) for Moule’s part-work series “The English Counties Delineated” (London : 1830-1837) – and here in very early state, before the addition of later detail.
Steel line engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface 206 x 251mm (approx. 8-1/8” x 9-7/8”). A few tiny spots and specks, slight crease to upper margin, but overall in very good and clean state. Rare in this early state and with original colour. A guaranteed genuine antique map.
